Precision in water regulation with the LH 22 C Industry

The Goolwa Barrage in South Australia plays a key role in SA Water's operation of infrastructure on the River Murray. The LH 22 C Industry machine from Liebherr, which was purpose-built for this application, is proving to be a reliable asset in regulating the water flow.

SA Water delivers essential water and sewerage services to more than 1.8 million South Australians. On behalf of the Murray-Darling Basin Authority, the utility also operates locks one to nine along the River Murray and a system of five barrages.

The Goolwa Barrage, located near the town of Goolwa on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula, helps to reduce salinity levels in the lower reaches of the River Murray, Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert, and to stabilise the river level for upstream pumping and irrigation. The structure consists of sluices and weirs.

Special requirements

SA Water was looking for a customised machine to regulate the flow of water through the Goolwa Barrage using dam beams and for lifting operations.

The challenge was to develop a machine capable of placing, removing and relocating concrete logs weighing up to 1.7 tonnes in the vertical grooves of the dam structure. These dam beams, which are inserted up to six metres deep, are used to control the flow of water through the barrage. A key requirement of this project was to design the machine to have a load-bearing capacity of around five tonnes with a low total weight of less than 26 tonnes.

Liebherr worked with SA Water to develop a special LH 22 C Industry for this particular application. The intensive collaboration between the SA Water team and Liebherr engineers was crucial to ensure the development was based on the customer's specific requirements.

The LH 22 C Industry is a bespoke masterpiece that was tailored to our specific needs in close collaboration with Liebherr. The expertise of the engineers also helped to realised the uniqueness of this project.

The solution

The customised LH 22 C Industry consists of a Liebherr LH 22 uppercarriage with rigid cab elevation, a 5.3-metre-long gooseneck boom and a 3.05-metre-long dipper stick. The precision-manufactured rail guide system as the undercarriage enables it to be used on the unique 3.3-metre-long tracks on site.

The machine has a heavy-duty lifting winch for general lifting tasks and the Liebherr TR 25 compact tiltrotator for handling stop logs. In addition, a stop log lifter was developed on site to further optimise the machine. Thanks to the hydraulics quick-change system, the attachments can be efficiently replaced.
